Sustainable Farm in New Brunswick

My dad’s got a great farm out in Shediac Cape, New Brunswick. He and his wife Carla have set out to build a sustainable farm complete with a rammed-earth house and electricity from renewable energy sources. Here he is grinding some wheat (and getting some excercise).

Pedal Powered Grinder

Finally a good use for an exercise bike. This bike has been hooked up to a grain grinder and put to work. We have grown the wheat and now we grind it. Then we eat cookies.

I keep bugging my pops to document their progress. They’ve been gardening, playing around with lathes, researching ram-pump technologies, etc. Hopefully soon he’ll take some pictures and help us out with some how-to info (I especially want DIY instructions for that grinder pictured above).

Cook Stove

Our cookstove arrives and gets an immediate test. We had Bryan and Helen over for potatoes fried with onions and peppermint tea. It is an Enterprise woodstove built here in Sackville NB. It did service for many years in New Caanan NB.

If you want to help motivate him to write about their adventures building a sustainable farm, leave your comments below and tell him just how great it would be… thanks!

  1. Hi,
Its good to see some projects like this happening here in NB. I’ve just been working in South Africa with small black communities helping them become a little more self sufficient. Im trying to find sustainable development/farming projects in NB to help out with, so if you guys know of anything , please let me know!
